We had a wonderful Halloween here at St. Luke. We created scary pumpkins, made monsters, wrote stories and carved a classroom pumpkin. We estimated how many seeds were in the pumpkin (400). Most of the estimates were off by about 1000...something we will be working on. The children were surprised to find out that pumpkins can float. The children looked adorable in their costumes. A great time was had by all.
The Catholic Graduate Expectations Award this month will be for "Dignity of Person." In Grade 1, we will be focusing on being kind and gentle and showing respect for others. We are talking about peace and how to demonstrate through our actions that we are a peaceful people. On November 11th there will be a Remembrance Day service in the gym at 10:45. Please join us.
In Language, we are learning to make connections as we read. The children will be learning how to make "good" connections. Often at this age the children focus on very simple connections, i.e. I have a friend who has the same name as the main character. The goal in Grade 1 is to learn to make connections that helps them understand the story better. For example, I've been on a roller coaster so I know why it is scary so therefore I know how the main character feels. Try to practice this strategy when reading with your child. In writing we will be working on adding descriptive words to our writing. Our letters this week are j, k, and v. We will also be practicing stretching out words using the vowels that we have learned so far, a, o, I.
In Math, we are continuing to practice counting to 20, adding 1 more, or making 1 less. We will begin to explore 2D shapes at the end of the week.
I look forward to seeing you at the interviews on Thursday, November 5th. Be sure to book on-line.
Have a great week.
