It was lovely to meet so many of you at programme night. I look forward to working with you and your child this year.
Our class is ready to begin the first unit in the Growing in Faith, Growing in
Christ program for Grade 1. The program is built on the curriculum expectations
found in the Catholic Elementary Curriculum Policy Document for Grade 1.
Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ will follow the liturgical year of the Catholic
Church, and will align with what is happening in our parish. This program will
provide a meaningful daily faith experience for your child, building a knowledge
of the faith with an emphasis on the importance of family.
The first unit, “I Am a Child of God,” will introduce your child to God as our
Creator. The unit will take approximately 11 weeks.
This week the focus will be that each person is special and that God has called each one by name. They will explore the importance of their own names and understand that each person is unique in the eyes of God.
In Language, the children are working hard learning to read. Some children read the words and some students are reading the pictures. They are learning to build up reading stamina. The goal this week is to read for 6 minutes without interruption. The strategies we are working on are using picture cues and beginning sounds. We do lots of rhyming and sound work during our language block. The letter sounds we are working on are “m, s, f, and b.” Please continue to read to your child at home. It is through your modelling that your child can develop a love of reading.
In Math, the children are learning to print the numbers and number words. This week we will be learning 10, 11, and 12. They are also learning how to sort. The children are working on sorting objects based on specific attributes such as colour, shape, and size. They are working with a partner to play a sorting game, “Guess My Rule.” At home, sorting laundry is a great way to show the children how we use math in real life.
On Friday, we will be doing the Terry Fox Run. Students are asked to bring in a “toonie for Terry.”
Have a great week!
