Friday, February 10, 2017 – read-a-thon celebration, Hundred’s Day celebration Tuesday, February 14th – Valentine’s Day – please have your child just sign their name to their Valentine cards. This makes it much easier for them to hand out. We will be celebrating 100’s Day and the end of our read-a-thon on Friday, February 10th. We will be counting to 100 through games, and reading and writing activities. Thank you for supporting our read-a-thon. Please be sure to keep reading this week. The children are very excited to post the number of books read on our classroom graph and to tally the class total daily. Our class has read 359 so far! The gummy worms are flying off my desk daily! Lost Teeth - Alexa and Cayden have each lost a tooth in January. It does sound like there are lots of wiggly teeth, so the tooth fairy may be busy in February.

Thursday, February 2, 2017 – Pasta money due – It is truly amazing how quickly January flew by. We finished the chapter book, Dinosaurs Before Dark. I hope your child had a chance to tell you all about the story. We have begun book two in this series, The Night at Dawn. The children are very engaged during the story. I am sure that some of the children will soon be reading these books on their own. Thank you for supporting our read-a-thon. Reminder: Wednesday, January 18th, 2017 – our day on the sledding hills!
Our first week back was busy and tiring. The children have quickly settled back into our daily routines and are working on building back up their stamina in completing reading, writing, and math activities. I am reading a chapter book to the students called Dinosaurs Before Dark. This is the first book in the Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne. I read one chapter a day and the children are so eager and engaged, they hate when I stop! Encourage your child to talk about what we have read. It is very important for the children to learn how to remember information in longer texts. This week we will continue to work on: Reading

Happy birthday Lindsay, our first student to turn 7! The tooth fairy was busy over the holidays, Conor, Freya, Emily and Danielle lost teeth over the break. Reminder: CGE Awards, Friday, January 13th Popcorn day, January 13th I hope everyone had a wonderful, relaxing holiday. We are now heading into a very busy time of the year. The first term report card will be going home mid-February. The students are expected to be reading between level 8 and 11 by that time. It is important that your child reads and practices the word wall words daily. In writing, student are expected to write 3 sentences that make sense and are beginning to use capitals and periods correctly. In Mathematics, student should be able to name and recognize 2D shapes. They should be able to count to 100 by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s, and to print numbers to 20. The children should be able to add and subtract to 10 and to explain and show how they got their answers. The children should be able to create, name and extend simple patterns and use math language to identify the patterns. The children should be able to tell time to the hour. We began this week (Tuesday) with a classroom celebration. We lite the pink candle which symbolizes joy and reminds us that we are waiting in joyful hope that Jesus will bring light to the world. Throughout the week we will be reading stories and learning about the different symbols of the Christmas season. December 4th – Bemnet’s birthday This week marks the first week of Advent. Advent is the first season of liturgical year. It is a time of joyful expectation. November 20 – 25 – Bully Awareness and Prevention Week, Wednesday, November 23, 2016, pizza day Friday, November 25th – Snowflake Dance, 5:00 – 8:30 p.m. As you are aware, Mrs. Jennifer Roy. beloved mother of Mason Shaver (Grade 5), Reed Pruner (Grade 1) and Lexi Pruner (SK), died last week. We began our week with a short prayer service to pray for Reed and his family. The children made cards and pictures to send to Reed to let him know that we are thinking of him. I hope everyone is surviving the time change. The weather is certainly getting much colder. Please be sure to send your child to school with warm mitts, hats, and extra socks for wet days. The children are outside 3 times a day and the lunch recess is 40 minutes long. Many children are complaining of being hungry throughout the day. Please be sure to send snacks that are filling such as, yoghurt, cheese and crackers, hard-boiled eggs, bagels and cream cheese. As well, be sure to send your child to school with a water bottle.
